Manus, Rio de Janeiro, and other Brazilian ports can be also dangerous with a petty crime such as pickpockets which is a frequent concern. Recently, the robbers have become more sophisticated, thus now they are using ATM machines to take out crew member’s monies. Also, there are a lot of cases when crew members visit putana house and return back to the ships with only underwear on themselves. One such case was the one where a Slovakian crew member who worked on board Celebrity got mobbed for not being cautious while getting back to the ship. He went to putana House and came back only in his underwear. Maybe the most devastating case concerning this port is the case which occurred last year while the Azamara Journey was in Rio. Crew members were surprised to see a dead body floating in the water from the crew mess windows.

Ship Happens and then you go back home on vacation.

In Rio de Janeiro, it is also common to walk next to the beach of Copacabana or Ipanema and someone spill to dirty your shoes (it can be mustard or some white liquid). The one who does it is associated with one of those who clean shoes in the place that, surprisingly, come to you to offer you to clean your shoes. If you decide to have your shoes cleaned, these will then cost you a price too high, like 100 Brazilian reais, and if you refuse to pay it, the boy starts screaming calling the police and saying that you are refusing to pay him and that They had agreed 100 reais. DO NOT LET CLEAN YOUR SHOES FOR ANYONE IF SOMEONE SPILL SOMETHING TO THEM.

This year a crew member working on MSC Poesi was was reported missing in Rio de Janeiro. The cruise ship docked on February 12, for the Rio Carnival and stayed overnight when he disembarked alone. When he didn’t come back to the ship his friend reported the missing person to the ship’s and port authorities and took to the social media to find him. Luckly this story had a happy ending.

Hours later he was found by the taxi driver who took Antonio to a bar. He was found unconscious, but alive! The crew member meet two girls in Rio which poured a drug into his drink. This drug is known in Brazil as “Boa Noite Cindarela” or translated in English “Good Night Cinderella” This is a cocktail of drugs, usually found in the form of a liquid. These drugs act directly on the central nervous system, which can cause amnesia during the intoxication. And this is exactly what happen to the crew member after which he lost consciousness and several hours later woke up without his personal belongings. Thankfully he is alive and well and currently he is in a hotel with the agents representing MSC Cruises.

About the drug “Boa Noite Cinderela”
“Boa Noite Cinderela” is a mix of drugs, among which: Lorax, Rohypnol, Lexotam, GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyric acid) and Ketamine. These drugs are usually mixed in drinks causing loss of consciousness and amnesia during the intoxication
Due to these effects, the substance is widely used by thefts and aggressors who dope the victim in order to assault or abuse sexually. This drug is often applied in nightclubs, but it can also occur in restaurants. The mourner pretends to be ingesting a certain drink - containing a narcotic substance - and offers the victim, who, after ingesting the counterfeit liquid, is at the mercy of the bandit. These cases are rarely recorded in police stations, since the victims are usually embarrassed to recount what happened, or sometimes they can’t remember, or rather be sure of, what actually happened.

Rio de Janeiro is a big city, but you have to be very careful because foreigners are the target of traps and robberies. The "Goodnight Cinderella" is one of how they have to steal. That's why you should be very careful when it comes to nightlife. Some tips to avoid problems in Rio de Janeiro:

1 - Never accept a drink from a stranger.

2- If you are drinking something at the bar or a table, try to have your glass at all times in sight. If someone speaks to you from the side and you have to turn around to look at the person, take the glass with your hand and keep it always in front of you.

3- Be careful with people you do not know and who are very kind, trying all the time to seduce you and have casual sex with you and invite you to go to an apartment or a discreet place. In general, they are connected with other people who are going to attack you on the way to the supposed site or attack you while you are busy. They usually steal everything and even your underwear to prevent them from you running out and asking for help.

4- Do not go to places you do not know at night. Rio de Janeiro can be a trap and cause you many problems. Try to go as a group to night places and not disconnect between you.

5- Advice for women: when you go out, do not wear jewelry, expensive watches or bijoutery that seem costly. There are many motorcycle assaults that only will rip off your jewelry without even knowing if they are real or not. But they can hurt you, and you're going to have a bad time.
